When traveling by car in Japan, expressways are the primary means of transportation.
However, please note that expressway tolls in Japan are significantly higher than in many other countries and became even more expensive after the 2024 price increase.
Japan's expressways are safe, well-maintained, and highly convenient, but tolls vary based on distance traveled and road type.
Therefore, be prepared for higher costs when traveling between multiple cities or covering long distances for sightseeing.

With other services, customers often have to contact multiple locations and make arrangements themselves. However, with TEP, you can complete everything with a single click when you book your rental car. No complicated procedures required!
- 1. Check TEP on the booking Form
- When making a rental reservation, if you are in an area where TEP is available, it will be displayed on the booking form.
- 2. That's it!
- By checking the option and completing the booking, your TEP application will be completed simultaneously.

ETC Card Pickup Required
The TEP includes an ETC card, which you need to pick up before picking up your rental car.
The ETC card can be picked up at the airport terminal or nearby convenience stores or post offices.
Easy Search with TOCOO! STORE LOCATOR
You can search for pickup stores using the TOCOO! STORE LOCATOR app, and you can also check directions to the store, ensuring you can pick up the card without confusion.
It is convenient to register it on your smartphone's home screen, as you can easily access it while traveling.
How to pick up
Please pick them up at a convenience store (Lawson, Family Mart) in the airport terminal or nearby.
* At Narita Airport Terminal 2/Nagasaki Airport, the options will be collected at the airport post office (the recipient's name must match the passport).
Select the airport to receive your options on the booking form-
The closest airport to the rental car pickup location is selected by default. Select a new airport as needed. Identification is required to receive the option, so please be sure to enter receiver name.
Check the pickup store information in your booking confirmation-
You will find the URL to confirm informations for the pickup store in the booking completion email. Check it in advance.
You will receive a notification email after complete your booking-
You will receive an email 2 days prior to the car rental date with all the information you need to pick up the car, including a QR code or barcode and the URL of the location.
After arriving in Japan, move to the pick up location-
Use the Store Locator or other tool to find a store where you can pick up your order and go there.
Options received / ready to use-

- Show and the tracking number and the ID (Passport etc.) at the counter to receive the Letter Pack.
How to Return
Options to be returned should be put into the return envelope (prepaid and pre-addressed) that came with the package, and put in any post box in Japan.
Notes on picking up and returning
- You can't get the TOCOO! options at the car rental outlet.
- You need a TOCOO! ETC card for TEP, TEP Hokkaido and TEP Kyushu. Get one at the designated store in the airport.
- Please note that we can not take any responsibility for the case you can not receive the options due to incorrect name/Email address, or misunderstanding the receiving location etc.

NOTES
- You can apply for TEP up to 10 days before the pickup date of the ETC card and up to 180 days before the return date of the rental car.
- You can apply for the TEP for up to 30 days. If you use the expressway outside of this period, you will be charged the regular toll fees. Please note in advance.
- The number of usage periods will be automatically set to match the rental car term. You cannot extend or shorten the TEP usage period.
- You may not lend your ETC card to others. If someone else uses your ETC card, the fees will be charged to the credit card registered at the time of application. Please note in advance.
- We are not liable for any traffic restrictions imposed by road management authorities.
- TEP can only be used on sections with designated ETC lanes. Please note in advance.
